A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind attacks on locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
