RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
