Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
